Starting a business for the first time is exciting and overwhelming in equal measure. There is a lot to think about and it can be hard to know where to begin. This pathway gives you a clear, practical sequence to follow — from confirming your idea through to making your first sale. Take it one step at a time.
Before you do anything else, get very clear on what you are selling, who you are selling it to, and why they should buy from you rather than someone else. These three questions sound simple but most new business owners cannot answer them precisely — and that vagueness makes everything harder.
Your offer is not just a description of what you do. It is a clear statement of the outcome you deliver, for whom, and at what price. "I am a graphic designer" is not an offer. "I create brand identities for independent food businesses, starting from £800" is an offer.
The narrower your focus at the start, the easier it is to find customers, create marketing that resonates, and build a reputation. You can always broaden later. Many successful businesses started by serving one very specific type of customer extremely well.
Write down your offer in one sentence. Then ask yourself: if someone read this, would they immediately know whether it was for them? If the answer is no, keep refining.
